MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid were given a Spanish Cup shock on Tuesday when third division minnows and unheralded city neighbours Alcorcon dished out a 4-0 drubbing to the nine-time European champions.

The tiny provincial side, with a miniscule annual budget of just 1.2 million euros - 300 times less than their esteemed visitors - added a notable footnote to their modest history in front of their home fans at the 3,000-capacity Estadio Municipal de Santo Domingo.

Real were undone by the club which was only founded in 1971 with an own goal by former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa, Borja Perez's brace, and Ernesto Gomez.

Not pleasant viewing for Real president Florentino Perez and club director Jorge Valdano watching from the stands.

If they fail to overturn the lopsided scoreline in the second leg of this Last 32 tie it will by no means be the first time Real Madrid have bid a hasty farewell to the Copa del Rey.

The Spanish giants, who last collected the title way back in 1993, were kicked out of Spain's premier cup competition in 2008 by Third Division side Real Union, a loss that triggered the dismissal of coach Bernd Schuster.

Real's embarrassing defeat on Tuesday came despite the presence of Raul and Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini welcoming back injured strikers Karim Benzema and Ruud van Nistelrooy but Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine forward Gonzalo Higuain, who also missed the club's 0-0 draw with Sporting Gijon last weekend, were still sidelined.

Frenchman Benzema was injured in both feet while Dutchman van Nistelrooy has been out for several weeks with a thigh muscle injury.

Pellegrini elected to rest several top players, including Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso and Kaka, for the match.

Tuesday's reverse came after a bad seven days which started with Real losing to AC Milan in the Champions League and then the goalless draw at Gijon.

Alcorcon's achievement meanwhile knocked a sizeable dent in Pellegrini's pre-match assertion that Real's ambition was "to win every competition".

Avi , do you know that Alcorçon squad (metropol of Madrid) are fanatics of Real Madrid ? Is there better gift to give to them ;) .If you have seen the game you will realize that Madrid didn't play seriously that match .How can a small team dominate the game and score 4 goals ? People in Spain are blaming us for making hundreds of millions from yesterday's game with bookies but it's not true we were just not motivated yesterday night .

The one in the picture is not Arbeloa. It is Riera. Socerway is making silly mistakes like Real Madrid do....

Avi82, I hope you're not one of those Real Madrid bashers. I'm taking notes on what everyone's saying about Real. After they win the Spanish League and the CL I will post all the negative comments you guys made.

Soccerway copy-paste its articles from Yahoo. How about Real Madrid? copy-paste its tactics from Man Utd (specifically from Burnley game)?

Just joking, no malice intented. I love Real Madrid as they produce good football (I mean used to be)...

I bet Newty have already ordered Alcorcon shirt....

Our tactics we copied them from Barcelona - Rubin Kazan game ;)

If I remember well all Madrid's coaches were given 5 bad results in a row to be sacked , in 5 games we registered 4 bad results the next one will be probably the last one for Pellegrini .

If we stun Getafe and win in Milan then Pellegrini will be still our coach . Ramos made 5 bad results last year before he was kicked and the same with Schuster . In Pellegrini's case I would give him more time , 2 months is not enough time to find the right formula .

As I've stated before, Real do (just like many other big clubs) have a tendency to play down to obviously weaker oposition. That said, the result was still a disgrace. However, I can't blame Pellegrini too much. All he can do is set the tactics and train the side during the week, he can't play the game for them. As a former player, I know that if a manager's tactics aren't working, or if the team sees opportunities open, they should change strategy on the fly! The manager shouldn't have to tell players what to do all the time, these guys are pros for god's sake!

That said, I could honestly care less about the Copa del Rey. It's the league title and the CL that we want. As long as we can get our minds right, we can be dangerous. We need to put the "minnows" in their place though. It shouldn't take a tremendous effort to run over a side like Alcorcon, even with reserve players in the team. We never used to play this sloppy. A change in the player's mindset is needed before we get into sacking a manager. As the addage goes though... "Players win games. Coaches lose them. And refs ruin them." In the end, Pellegrini will always be blamed for his players poor showings, wether he deserves it or not.

I know we fans of Madrid demanding too much and many fans are not satisfied even when we win 5-0 outside of Madrid . But to be honest we didn't play a single decent game till here even we are only 3 points behind Barcelona and scored a lot of goals . I can see Pellegrini is trying something which is not his own tactics and I can't blame him because he is asked to play so , our defense is really vulnerable even we score 5 goals still there's danger and anytime any team can come back and win the game ,it almost happened for Inter yesterday against Palermo as their defense is vulnerable even they have Zanetti and Maicon .

Once again I am shocked about Spanish media articles who agreed to blame Pellegrini alone , shame on them !
